The Visa Global Travel Intentions Survey has revealed some key trends in outbound travel from Hong Kong and choices that define traveller behaviour.
Japan, Taiwan and Mainland China are the top travel destinations for business and leisure travellers in Hong Kong. Half of all respondents said they are likely to visit Japan for leisure in the next two years, one third intended to visit Taiwan (36%), closely followed by Mainland China (32%).
Hong Kong travellers also plan to make more trips than the global average but their duration of stay tends to be shorter. They plan to take on average six international trips over the next two years, with an average stay of seven nights on their next vacation. This compares to the global average of four international trips in the next two years with an average stay of 10 nights.
Holidaymakers from the SAR are also more frugal when abroad. Respondents spent an average of US$1,188 on their last trip and will budget US$1,301 per trip in the forthcoming two years. This is well below the global average of US$1,895 for anticipated future trips.
While abroad, the majority (64%) of Hong Kong travellers will stay in three- or four-star hotels, while 22% will opt for five-star hospitality and 12% will check-in to a resort.
Over half of those travellers (53%) intend to holiday with their spouse or partner. Holidaying with family and relatives (42%) is the next most popular choice, followed by travelling with friends (29%).
There is a fairly even split in the way people in Hong Kong like to arrange their trip. Results show that 37% of people will arrange everything themselves. Flexible individual tours which allow travellers to choose their own activities are the next most preferred way to travel (30%), followed by packaged group tours (28%).
Finally, some key findings on what influences travel choices. Food tours are the number one most likely activity for Hong Kong travellers during their vacations. Taking part in outdoor activities and experiencing local nightlife are the next most popular activities. Food was [previously a key factor in deciding where to go, but this is now second to political stability, followed by natural scenery.
As for research, a large majority of travellers rely on magazines (62%), travel guides (53%) and word of mouth (47%) for their holiday information. By contrast, global travellers are most likely to get their travel information from online sources (55%) rather than offline sources (43%).
