Swedish tourism authorities have set up a “virtual embassy” within an online computer game called Second Life.
Second Life is a “3D online digital world imagined, created and owned by its residents” and is the latest internet hit.
Car manufacturers as well as such firms as Coca-Cola and Nike have set up virtual stores within the game, which is already being played by more than 1 million people each month.
The new Swedish virtual embassy is the first such outpost in the game, and while it doesn’t actually offer visas or passports, it does give information about how to get them in the real world as well as providing other information about Sweden.
If Second Life really takes off it could have an impact on the travel industry, because it allows players to experience many parts of the world.
And getting around is pretty easy – players can simply teleport!
