The New South Wales (NSW) Department of Transport is reviewing the cost of City to Airport rail travel in Sydney. The review comes in response to widespread criticism over the expense of rail tickets.
Executive Officer of the Tourism Industry Council NSW, Andrew Jefferies, said; “The high cost of the fare is clearly a disincentive for tourists to use and simply encourages additional peak hour coach and taxi traffic to and from the Airport each day.” He cited the benefit of subsidised fares offered by the previous government which led to a 45% fare reduction and a 50% increase in travel demand. “If we are serious about continuing to sell Sydney to the world as a global city and the gateway to Australia, reducing the cost of the Airport Link ticket as a tourist’s first entry point to our city is a perfect, first step,” he added.
