In a major development for the hospitality industry in India, Taj Hotels has introduced a new brand for the upscale market, Anil Mathur reports from India.
Called ‘The Gateway’, the new brand is in addition to the luxury Taj brand and budget Ginger brand, which have recently been expanding at a fast pace.
The Gateway will initially have as many as 26 hotels operating under the new brand umbrella; 16 existing hotels and 10 new hotels. A total of 50 operating and signed hotels are expected in the near future.
Explaining the need and rationale for the new brand, Ajoy Misra, Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing for Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, told this correspondent that “as part of the Taj growth strategy, we needed an upscale brand that can have a large footprint across India. As part of our branding strategy we also wanted to introduce a new brand category to the emerging psychographic set of contemporary travellers.”
Introduction of The Gateway Hotels brand addresses these business requirements of the group, he added.
The reflagged hotels are located in Agra, Bangalore, Calicut, Chikmangular, Coonor, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Madurai, Mangalore, Nasik, Sasan Gir, Surat, Vadodhra, Vijaywada and Vishakapatnam. New hotels will include cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Jullandhar, Mysore, Navi Mumbai, Raipur and Gonda.
