Balls of solidified tar have once again appeared on Goa’s beaches, threatening the tourism industry, the Times of India has reported. The tar balls, formed by illegal discharge of oil by ships, are often washed ashore in the pre-monsoon period. In addition this year, a thick layer of oil is reportedly visible in the seawater at Benaulim beach. Commander VK Kanwar, COO of Drishti Special Response Services, told TOI that the organisation has been advising tourists to move away from polluted waters.
