Singapore Airlines’ new Indian venture, Tata-SIA Airlines, will acquire 20 Airbus A320 aircraft from a leasing company with a view to launching operations later this year, it has been revealed.
Speaking to the Press Trust of India (PTI) at the IATA AGM in Doha this week, Claire Leow, head of investor relations at BOC Aviation, confirmed the order.
“Tata-SIA has placed orders for leasing of 20 Airbus A320s from us,” Ms Leow was quoted saying by PTI. She added that deliveries at likely to start in “around September-October”.
Tata-SIA Airlines is the new Delhi-based full-service carrier being set up by SIA and Tata Sons. It plans to use the single-aisle A320s to start operations in the third or fourth quarter of the year, initially flying from Delhi to key Indian destinations including Mumbai, Goa, Srinagar, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
Under its four-year expansion plan, it will gradually increase its frequencies from 87 weekly flights to 11 destinations in year one to 301 flights and 21 destinations by the fourth year of operations.
In ordering the A320s, it will operate the exact same fleet as another new carrier, AirAsia India, although the Tata-SIA aircraft are likely to be equipped with two cabin classes, compared to AirAsia’s all-economy configuration.
