The British Embassy in Bangkok has opened a temporary consular office outside the demonstration zone, for British nationals requiring urgent assistance. Violent clashes between protestors and security forces near the Embassy have broken out, causing the official office to close. British nationals can also gain consular assistance on 02 305 8333. The Thai Government has declared the area in central Bangkok a “dangerous zone” and is urging those out there to check local media before venturing out. “Demonstrations still remain in parts of Bangkok. This is causing significant disruption and restriction of movement in and around the capital,” explained Tourism Authority of Thailand Chris Lee. Foreign Office called the situation “unpredictable” and said tourists should follow imposed curfews if they are put in place. It has also learned that threats have been made by the Red Shirts to set off explosions in Bangkok department stores. “Although no such incidents have occurred outside the cordon since it was imposed by the Military, the potential risk cannot be ignored,” the Foreign Office said. Tourism in the area has been severely affected as Thailand faces a number of cancellations. “The performance of the summer months will depends on how quickly a peaceful resolution can be made. Tourism Authority of Thailand remains in daily contact with our tour operator, ground-handler, airline and hotel partners. We continue to prepare a recovery plan of marketing activities which can be put into action as soon as it is appropriate,” said Lee. Main beach resorts like Phuket and Ko Samui were open for business as usual. Meanwhile, Japan Airlines (JAL) has reduced its flight frequency to Bangkok from Osaka and Nagoya throughout June as booking numbers decline.
