Cross-border traffic between Thailand and Malaysia has dropped dramatically in the past year, a report said.
Malaysia’s Deputy Tourism Minister Donald Lim was quoted saying by The Bangkok Post blamed the 20% decline on heightened security measures in the troubled region.
Visiting Thais are subject to checks from the Immigration Department, police, anti-smuggling units and the Road Transport Department.
“These are among the reasons for the decline in tourist arrivals from Thailand,” Lim told the newspaper. “We have brought the matter to the attention of the Prime Minister’s Department, and I am sure we will be able to solve the issue soon.”
Lim also called for the introduction of a special card for regular cross-border visitors, similar to the system in place for overland travellers between Malaysia and Singapore.
