Thai Airways International (THAI) is adding to its Middle East network with the launch of flights to Kuwait, and plans to open services to Abu Dhabi and Riyadh. The Bangkok Post reported that the first of THAI’s five-times-a-week Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi)-Kuwait City services will start on 29 March. The route will be served using the national carrier’s three-class Airbus 340-600 aircraft, capable if carrying 267 passengers.
The newspaper also reported that THAI will is also considering whether to launch direct services to the UAE and Saudi Arabian capitals, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh. A decision is expected within the next two weeks. Both routes are likely to be served four times a week using the airline’s 305-seat Airbus A330-300 aircraft.
THAI currently offers direct services to just two Middle Eastern cities - Dubai and Muscat - but the cash-strapped carrier already has the flying rights to the new destinations and is reportedly keen to further tap into this potentially lucrative region.
Demand on the Kuwait and Abu Dhabi routes consists of leisure, labour and business travel, while demand on the Bangkok-Riyadh sector is largely for pilgrimage.
