Thailand’s lucrative tourism industry is looking for ways to revive the country’s image abroad, as the effect on anti-government protests start to take their toll on the industry. The Bangkok Post has reported that as of yesterday, 14 countries had issued travel advisories warning their citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Thailand, and tourism organisations across the country are seeking to limit potential damage.
“The tourism business is in deep trouble and we should work together to solve it right now,” said Kongkrit Hiranyakit, Chairman of the Tourism Council of Thailand. He added that aggressive PR campaigns and international roadshows led by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would be the key to recovery.
Earlier this week, the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) issued a statement trying to calm visitors’ fears over travel to Thailand. The statement, first published by TDA, proclaimed that Bangkok, and the country as a whole, was open for business as usual.
The Thai Hotels Association (THA) agrees, saying that positive promotion will involve bringing people into the Kingdom to see for themselves that the situation is not as bad as it appears. “Marketing campaigns should focus on inviting travellers, tour agents and the foreign press to visit many tourist destinations,” said THA Vice President, Surapong Techaruvichit.
Whatever the damage caused by Thailand’s political division, it is clear that the country’s tourism industry needs to come together to get through the crisis
