Thailand leads way in regional spa market

The IntelligentSpas benchmarking report for 2007 has been released, showing that Thailandcontinues to be the industry leader in Asia Pacific. With a total of 11,240people working in 585 spas, Thailandhas almost double the total employment level of the next highest employer, China(6,000 personnel). Thailandalso sees the highest number of spa visits - 3,649,000. There are signs howeverthat Thailand is not makingthe most of its market dominance; total spa revenue is actually highest in Australia where the spa industry generatesUS$271 million compared to Thailand’sUS$263 million, despite seeing over 1.3 million fewer visits.
The United ArabEmirates (UAE) has also been highlighted as a growing market for spas. Despiteonly having 65 spas employing 1,430 people, the UAE’s luxury market means itachieves the highest revenue per spa and has the highest forecast growth rateof spa numbers in the region. The UAE spa industry currently generates US$70million. New Zealand has thelargest proportion of stand-alone spas (77%), while the UAE and Cambodia(both 66%) have the highest proportion hotel and resort-based spas.
