In June 2008, some 30,000 Lions International members will converge for their annual convention in Bangkok. Two months later, the ITU-International Telecom Union - will stage a major exhibition/conventions of the telecom industry, with about 30,000 participants.
Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau Director for Meetings and incentives Malinee Kitaphanich told a media conference that the industry has been doing well and is on track to do even better next year.
TCEB expects to generate some Bt 55 billion (US$1.7 billion) in revenue from the MICE industry, about 18 percent more than last year.
Malinee said the industry is slated to grow some 20 percent, as MICE delegates were high-yield. They spend about Bt10,000 per person per day and stay for about ten days, .
In contrast, leisure tourists spend about Bt4,000 per person per day and stay a relatively shorter six days.
Business travellers are also the fastest growing segment, according to statistics from last year. At almost 1.2 million, the figure was 30 percent more than the figure in 2005.
The number of convention delegates was over 722,000, up 27percent from the previous year.
