Thailand is pushing ahead with a second-phase expansion of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport with 10 projects worth 73 billion baht (US$2.3 billion).
Bangkok Post said the plans to expand the airport were raised at a meeting yesterday between the Transport Minister Santi Prompat and representatives from Airports of Thailand and the Civil Aviation Department.
The capital’s airport was plagued with irregularities and operational problems when it opened in late September 2006.
Two projects – construction of the third runway and hiring of the Project Management Consultant group – will be carried out this year. Other projects include an automated people mover, car park and a noise pollution reduction scheme which will be implemented over five years.
The Minister was quoted saying that building a domestic terminal at Suvarnabhumi should proceed without waiting for the second phase. The second domestic terminal, the report said, should relieve passenger traffic at the main terminal.
The expansion scheme was put on hold by the previous administration to save money and as an interim measure, the old Don Mueang airport was partially reopened.
