Thailand to upgrade airport security
Airports of Thailand (AoT), which operates Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, is preparing to beef-up security measures following the anti-government protests that closed the city’s airports late last month, The Nation has reported.
Serirat Prasutanond, Acting President of AoT and Suvarnabhumi’s Airport Director, said the company would make its proposal to the government soon, calling on all agencies to protect the airport from any further attack.
“No one anywhere in the world would allow airports to be shut down,” Serirat was reported saying. “They must be safe places for all users.”
Precise details of what the extra security measures will involves was not reported, however the newspaper said that AoT will urge measures that “entail cooperation by several units under clear state guidance”.
Serirat emphasised that the company’s security measures were not aimed at protecting the airport from an outside attack, but to help airport users. He added that Suvarnabhumi’s international ranking would drop below 20th place following the shutdown and that the airport’s goal of reaching the top 10 next year would be affected.
