Tibet received 140,000 domestic and international tourists in the first quarter of this year, a 6.9% increase year-on-year, according to the Tourism Administration of Tibet Autonomous Region.
Xinhua reported the administration as saying that Tibet’s tourism-generated revenue hit CNY128.6 million (US$18.9 million) during the quarter – up 5% from the same period last year. Earnings from domestic visitors totalled CNY109.5 million, up 10.4%, while international receipts reached US$2.8 million, an 11.9% decline from Q1 2008.
The report stated that the region saw a revival of its tourism industry that was adversely affected by the riots in Lhasa last year. During the Chinese Spring Festival and the traditional Tibetan New Year, which fell in January and February respectively, the region saw a total of 114,000 tourists from home and abroad.
With the May Day holiday (1-3 May) approaching, Tibet is expected to witness a further spike in arrivals. A total of three million Chinese and foreign tourists are projected to visit the region in 2009, according to the administration’s forecasts.
