Tigerair will cease operating to Alice Springs this summer, just a year after relaunching flights to the central Australian city.
The low-cost carrier said it will suspend the routes from Sydney and Melbourne to Alice Springs from 22 July 2014, due to “an unsustainable level of consumer demand”. Flights between Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast will also be suspended.
Instead, Tigerair will increase its Sydney-Gold Coast route from two to four flights per day.
“We have been flying to Alice Springs and to Sunshine Coast for just over a year now and we have worked closely with our tourism and airport partners to promote these services,” said Tigerair Australia’s CEO, Rob Sharp.
“While we have seen some market stimulation, it is unfortunately not enough to sustain our services to Alice Springs and Sunshine Coast at this time. The commercial reality is we are a volume business and to build a sustainable business in the Australian domestic market we need to see a sustainable level of demand for our services.”
Last month, Tigerair launched two new routes from its new base at Brisbane, connecting to Cairns and Darwin, and also recently added a new service between Sydney and the Whitsunday Islands.
