It now has 35.7 million people and should rise to 36 million by 2025, according to the UN’s 2007 “Revisions of World Urbanisation Prospects”.
An official quoted by Japan Times said Tokyo accounted for 42% of the urban population of the country.
Currently after Tokyo, the next most populous urban agglomerations are New York-Newark, Mexico City, Mumbai and Sao Paulo, each with about 19 million inhabitants.
By 2025, however, the report said Mumbai would be the second-largest, with a population of 26 million, followed by Delhi (23 million), Dhaka (22 million) and Sao Paulo (21 million).
Besides the top five, other Asian cities, including Calcutta, Shanghai, Karachi, Manila, Beijing, Jakarta, Guangzhou, Osaka-Kobe, Lahore, Shenzhen and Madras, are projected to be among the world’s 27 most populated.
