A number of pressing issues were raised at the weekend meeting of the Indian Association of Tour Operators. The lack of language guides in some key tourist areas at peak times was raised by several members, with some feeling that this was leading to unethical practices. Special mention was made of Chinese guides, as their demand is increasing as traffic from China grows. The issue of registration of agents – for which 31 August is the deadline in Delhi – was also raised. Members expressed the lack of clarity on the question of the need for police verification.IATO has improved its website and will make it more interactive, so that members can not only raise issues, but also make suggestions, the office bearers said.Meanwhile, the dates of the annual convention of IATO have been moved slightly because of the PATA Mart in Delhi. It will now be held from 22-25 September at a location to be finalised. Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh as well as Gujarat and Maharashtra are among the possibilities.
