Tourism Fiji CEO Josefa Tuamoto has roundly applauded the International Air Services Commission’s preliminary announcement on requests for capacity between Australia and Fiji from both V Australia and the Qantas Group.
The IASC has allocated 907 seats of capacity in each direction to V Australia, as well as 852 seats to Qantas, saying this will result in “strong competition benefits,” with two new carriers on the route and greater frequencies which should “further intensify competition to fill seats”.
Splitting the capacity will allow V Australia to operate six B777-300 services per week, while Jetstar could operate four A321-213 flights.
The commission said that given the short lead-time before the proposed launch of services it has no objection to the carriers offering travel for sale based on the proposed allocations.
“While we recognise this as a draft decision and subject to final approvals being announced on 05 November, we are delighted that it would appear we will soon be seeing three carriers – two premium services and one LCC – operating on the Sydney-Australia route,” Mr Tuamoto said.
“We are confident that this will not only help us grow numbers out of Sydney but also other Australian ports and possibly even Western Australia which we have long viewed as a latent source of visitors for Fiji from this market.
“Whatever the final outcome it’s great news for Fiji’s tourism industry,” he said.
