Tourism in the province of Champassak, southern Laos, is expected to double in the next five years.
The Vientiane Times reported provincial tourism authorities as saying that arrivals jumped 25% to 500,000 in 2015, and this growth is expected to continue in future.
The new regional tourism brand “Southern Laos, Charming by Nature” was unveiled late last year, which aims to market Laos’ four southern provinces – Saravan, Xekong, Attapeu and Champassak – as a single tourism destination. This is being supported by a new website.
Attractions in the region include the UNESCO-listed Vat Phou Temple complex, the Mekong riverside town of Pakse, and Si Pan Don, or ‘4,000 islands’, where the Mekong fans out to create a series of islands, waterways and waterfalls.
At present, neighbouring Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia are Champassak’s largest visitor source markets, followed by Europe.
