Last year China accounted for 5.8% of the international tourism market, with 49m visitors, up from 10.5m in 1996.
The 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 World Expo are also likely to boost tourist numbers over the next few years, giving the UN cause to claim that China may be the worlds most popular tourist destination by 2015.
