A penniless Australian tourist who borrowed GBP5 (US$7.47) from a kind-hearted British man, has repaid the debt after 39 years, the BBC reported. Jim Webb from Sheffield lent Gary Fenton the money in Ostend, Belgium, for a ferry trip in April 1969.
Nearly 40 years later, Webb received a card and GBP200 to his home. A note inside read; “To Jim Webb, a good man. From Gary Fenton, a tardy payer of debts.”
Webb, 72, has appealed for Mr Fenton to get back in touch. “I am very sorry I was not in on Sunday… he would have been very welcome here. Hopefully we will be able to make contact, it would be wonderful to meet up again,” he was reported saying.
