The main highway linking the Chinese regions of Tibet and Xinjiang reopened to traffic on Friday, after authorities cleared up to a metre of snow which had fallen on the area. The 1,429km highway, which runs at an average altitude of 4,500m, is an important lifeline for both regions. China’s state news agency, Xinhua, reported that blizzards have swept across Tibet’s Ngari region in the past week, stranding more than 100 travellers in buses and cars on the remote highway.
