Trip.com: More Singaporeans travelling overseas for National Day weekend

The platform noted a 17 percent year-on-year (YoY) surge in flight bookings by travellers from Singapore for the National Day holidays

Online travel platform Trip.com reports that a larger number of Singaporeans are taking advantage of the upcoming SG60 National Day long weekend to travel overseas.

The platform noted a 17 percent year-on-year (YoY) surge in flight bookings by travellers from Singapore for the period from 7th to 11th August.

Across the entire month, growth in Singapore-outbound bookings were also ahead of neighbouring countries Malaysia and Thailand.

Trip.com’s general manager in Singapore Edmund Ong opined: “Singaporeans are always looking out for opportunities to travel, and with the upcoming National Day long weekend, more are making use of the extended holiday to take a quick trip overseas. In this instance, familiar favourites such as Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Shanghai have proven to be popular among Singapore travellers, as these places are accessible and easy to navigate, eliminating the need for extensive planning and preparation.”

He added that travellers gather with their loved ones to celebrate National Day wherever they are, fostering a sense of togetherness that enables them to create memorable moments that they can look back fondly on in the future.

Short- to medium-haul trips preferred

In terms of their overseas travel patterns, many Singaporeans are making use of the opportunity to take short to medium haul trips to Malaysia, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Vietnam and South Korea.

In addition to the nearby cities that are popular with Singaporeans, destinations like Seoul, Ho Chi Minh City, and Guangzhou also saw significant growth in travel demand from Singapore travellers, registering YoY growth of up to 90 percent.

Among the different traveller profiles, Generation Zs and Millennials emerged as the two groups that recorded the largest YoY growth in outbound travel bookings, with 19 percent and 31 percent YoY growth respectively.

In addition, female travellers are also contributing to the growth in travel demand, with this demographic seeing 30 percent YoY growth in travel bookings.
