After Jantar Mantar, Jaipur, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List at the international conference in Brasilia in July, the Indian government has forwarded a proposal nominating two more sites for World Heritage status. Shantiniketan, a small town in West Bengal made famous by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore which attracts thousands of visitors a year, has been nominated for the culture list. The second nomination for the natural category is the Western Ghats, a large mountain range in west India and one of the world’s ten most biologically diverse areas with more than 325 globally threatened plant and animal species. The nominations have been submitted to the World Heritage Centre for consideration at next year’s review.
