Typhoon Morakot slammed into China’s east coast on Sunday, killing at least six people, forcing the evacuation of nearly a million, and causing travel chaos across swathes of the country. The storm had earlier lashed Taiwan with torrential rain that caused the island’s worst flooding in 50 years and left dozens missing and feared dead.
Morakot made landfall in Fujian province, carrying heavy rain and winds of 118.8 km per hour, Xinhua reported the province’s meteorological bureau as saying. At least six people on the Chinese mainland were reported dead yesterday, and more than 1.4 million people in Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Anhui provinces have been relocated. Morakot toppled more than 5,000 houses, the report said, adding that direct economic losses could amount up CNY6 billion (US$878 million). The airport in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang province, was closed yesterday.
The typhoon had already left a trail of destruction across Taiwan, killing at least 12 people. In Taitung, a six-storey hotel collapsed into a river after floodwaters eroded its base, but all 300 people inside were evacuated and uninjured.
