Airports across the UK saw a rise in passenger traffic and load factor last month following an increased number of routes. Gatwick Airport registered a 5.2% rise in passengers for June and 3% increase for the year, primarily due to its short haul network. This includes its new contracts from Norweigan, airberlin, easyJet, British Airways and Ryanair. In addition the airport is take on Vietnam Airlines and AirAsia X’s flights later this year, as well as new Lufthansa routes. Meanwhile for BAA, the operator has seen group-wide traffic increase 4% to 9.9 million during June, with passenger traffic up in every airport except Stansted. Heathrow continued to see record months with 6.1 million people travelling through its terminals in June (up 6.3%) but with a load factor of 79.3%. At Stansted, traffic had fallen 3.3% but its load factor improved nearly 3% to 84%. BAA’s Scottish airports all posted rises in passenger traffic, with Aberdeen’s up 10.1%; a 7.6% increase at Edinburgh and 2.1% more in Glasgow. “Heathrow’s position as the UK’s only hub airport enables it to benefit from growth in long-haul routes and emerging economies,” said Colin Matthew,s CEO of BAA Airports. “June’s passenger figures are an early indication of a busy summer, and we will focus on delivering the best possible service standards at our most popular time of year.”
