Two UK-based tour operators, Seguro and XL have declared bankruptcy, leaving thousands of holidaymakers stranded. The UK’s Telegraph newspaper reported earlier this week that Seguro, which operated package holidays and flights to the Iberian Peninsula went into administration, blaming the collapse of Spanish airline Futura, which supplied most of its flights.
Now this morning BBC reports have said that major UK tour operator, XL Leisure Group, faces similar difficulties. Although the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has claimed that XL continues to hold licenses as both a tour operator carrier and a commercial airline, XL has reportedly filed for administration. Last month the group’s airline arm, XL Airways, cancelled all scheduled flights to the Caribbean leaving thousands of holidaymakers stranded.
Bob Atkinson, of UK-based travel search engine, Travel Supermarket, told the BBC XL’s troubles would be blow for the travel trade. “If the news is true, it is a major, major thing for the industry, the British travel industry. They are a very large operator and this will send serious shock waves through the industry.”
However a CAA spokesperson said moved to quash rumours of XL’s demise; “It has not been confirmed to us that XL have filed for administration,” he said.
