Ulsan’s Nam-gu district, the heart of Korea's No. 1 industrial neighborhood and also known as the “City of Whales,” will host its annual “Jangsaengpo Hydrangea Festival” at the Osaek (Five-Colored) Hydrangea Park located in the Jangsaengpo Whale Cultural Village.
This year’s event will take place from June 7 to June 20, 2024, kicking off the district’s diverse summer festivities.
Jangsaengpo, once a major whaling hub, is now a prominent attraction in Nam-gu, offering various whale-related information and hands-on activities. It features the only whale museum in Korea, the Whale Sea Travel Ship, and the Whale Cultural Village, providing insights into the marine ecosystem associated with whales.
The Osaek Hydrangea Park, spanning 27,000 square meters within the 102,705 square meter Jangsaengpo Whale Cultural Village, has been developed over the past six years with the planting of over 30,000 hydrangea bushes.
This community-driven project aims to transform Jangsaengpo into a hydrangea village, resulting in a stunning sea of blue hydrangeas in full bloom every summer. The park boasts 35 different varieties of hydrangeas, including Endless Summer, Judy, and Verna, creating picturesque views reminiscent of a painting.
During the 2024 Jangsaengpo Hydrangea Festival, visitors can enjoy not only the vibrant hydrangeas but also a variety of activities such as a hydrangea fireworks show, garden concerts, busking performances, hydrangea-themed tattoos, and kite flying experiences. The park’s witty placards and themed photo zones provide perfect spots for memorable photos, and the monorail offers panoramic views of the hydrangeas spread across the Jangsaengpo hills and the Whale Cultural Village.
The festival, designed to offer a blend of visual and interactive experiences, is suitable for all ages. Last year's three-day festival attracted 65,000 visitors, and with this year's event extended to 14 days, an even larger turnout is anticipated.
Following the Hydrangea Festival, Jangsaengpo will continue to host themed festivals throughout the year, including the “Horror Festival” in August and the 28th “Ulsan Whale Festival” in September, showcasing the unique charm of the neighborhood.
