In a sign of just how bad things have become in the global economy, the price of that ultimate luxury good, the white truffle, has collapsed, according to a Bloomberg report. An 850g Italian white truffle sold for EUR24,000 (US$30,900) in Tokyo earlier this week – by weight, 84% less than the US$330,000 paid for a 1.5kg truffle last year.
“The financial crisis has definitely had an impact,” said Bruno Libralon, President of Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners.
