Unite is expected to launch a third industrial strike against British Airways today as it prepares to take a fresh ballot. If cabin crew decide to strike, the peak summer holiday season would be affected as action could start as early as 3 August. The Guardian reported it had seen a letter written to cabin crew by Unite’s Joint Secretaries Tony Woodley and Derek Simpson. In the letter they outline three areas of the dispute: using volunteer air stewards, the ban on travel perks and the “vindictive” disciplinary action some attendants have faced. “It has become apparent that the company’s continued refusal to reinstate staff travel concessions for striking members and its vindictive disciplinary measures against Unite members raises new items of dispute,” said Woodley and Simpson. BA has made some concessions on the travel ban but has said it will make no more. A spokesman said the airline denied victimising crew. BA is open for further discussions. During his speech at Business Travel Market last week, BA Chief Executive Willie Walsh said he expected the airline to fly 100% of its long-haul service during the impending strikes.
