CHICAGO,Dec. 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The pilots of United Airlines arecautiously optimistic about the airline’s announcement of a widebodyorder that includes 25 Boeing 787s and 25 Airbus 350s.
“Thoughwe are pleased that United has finally placed an aircraft order, it isdelayed gratification,” said Captain Steve Wallach, chairman of theUnited Master Executive Council of the Air Line Pilots Association.”For years, we have asked United to make a commitment to our airline’sfuture. At long last, they have taken one step in the right direction.
“It should be pointed out, however, that this widebody order is for replacement aircraft and not growth aircraft.”
United Airlines recently retired six Boeing 747s and 94 Boeing 737s, resulting in more than 1,400 pilots losing their jobs.
“Unitedstill needs to address its domestic, narrowbody fleet mix. Currentlythere is no United solution for recapturing previously lost domesticmarket share, revenue, or passengers,” said Captain Wallach. “Therestill remains a significant gap in the 70 – 120 seat range. The pilotsof United Airlines are dependent on those growth opportunities andremain willing to work with United to regain the airline’s preeminence.”
