UNWTO’s Secretary-General ad interim, Taleb Rifai, has expressed his solidarity with the people of Indonesia in the face of the recent event in Jakarta. Rifai confirmed that UNWTO is working closely with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture to advance its tourism sector, which plays a vital role for Indonesia in terms of jobs, trade and development. At the same time with its strong ecological and cultural characteristics, the sector is of significant strategic importance, with a great potential to play a leading role in the transformation to the green economy.
The UNWTO said that it has great confidence in the capacity of the government of Indonesia to overcome in the very short term the current difficulties and added that it looks forward to closer collaboration to assist in building an even stronger tourism sector in the future.
Australia issued a new travel warning against Indonesia within hours of Friday’s deadly twin blasts, while New Zealand has urged its citizens in Indonesia to keep a low profile. The UK also updated its travel warning, though it did not raise its alert level.
“We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to Indonesia due to the very high threat of terrorist attack,” the Australian Foreign Ministry said on its website.
