US aviation authorities warned of problems with oxygen tanks on board Boeing 747s months before Friday’s incident on a Qantas jet, The Times has reported. The danger was such that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered checks of US-registered Boeing 747s.
“We are issuing this (directive) to prevent failure to oxygen cylinder support under the most critical flight load conditions, which would cause the oxygen cylinder to come loose and leak oxygen,” the FAA told US carriers.
It is thought that a faulty oxygen cylinder was to blame for a mid-air explosion that ripped a hole in the fuselage of a Qantas flight on Friday, although this is yet to be confirmed by investigators.
