Venezuela’s firebrand President, Hugo Chavez, has ordered the 48-hour closure of all 115 branches of McDonalds in the country, the BBC has reported. The move is said to be due to tax irregularities, however is widely seen as part of a tit-for-tat campaign against the US government, of which Chavez is a fierce critic.
Chavez recently ordered the temporary closure of Pepsi’s offices in the country, while last month Venezuela and close ally Bolivia expelled their US envoys. Washington responded by ejecting envoys from Bolivia and Venezuela.
