US-based in-flight Wi-Fi provider, ViaSat, has secured a licence that will allow it to provide high-speed internet services aboard passenger aircraft.
The ‘Blanket License Radio Station Authorization’, issued by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), approves ViaSat to offer in-flight Wi-Fi services in all 50 US states.
Following the issue of the licence, ViaSat now plans to launch its ‘Exede In The Air’ system in the US, which is designed to improve in-flight internet services by providing enough bandwidth for all passengers. The system will be rolled out this autumn with JetBlue and one other major US airline.
“This is the first licence of its kind in the world,” said Mark Dankberg, ViaSat’s chairman & CEO. “We’re gratified to see the FCC recognising that the advanced technical design of this equipment is compatible with the operating environment in which our other Exede services successfully operate. Now airlines, and their passengers, will have access to an unprecedented amount of bandwidth. We want to let everyone on board be connected at high speed.”
Following the launch, ViaSat will offer high-speed Wi-Fi services onboard a fleet of approximately 400 aircraft in the US.
