Vietnam Airlines will suspend the operations of a number of its aircraft between June 2009 and January 2010, as it upgrades its fleet, VietnamNet Bridge reported. The national carrier’s General Director, Pham Ngoc Minh told the Vietnam News Agency that the suspensions were part of the airline’s plans to replace old aircraft, and would not affect its long-term operations.
Vietnam Airlines has ordered 39 new aircraft including Boeing 787-9s, Airbus A350-900s, and A321s. Between June 2009 and May 2010, the carrier will replace its ATR72-200s with 14 modern ATR72-500s. The carrier’s fleet is expected to comprise 104 aircraft by 2015 and 150 by 2020. Vietnam Airlines currently operates a fleet of 48 aircraft, comprising 13 Airbus A321-131s, 10 Airbus A320-200s, 10 Boeing 777-200ERs, seven ATR 72-202s, three ATR 72-500s, two Airbus A330-200s, two Fokker 70s, and one Airbus A330-300.
Minh added that the suspensions were an opportunity for Vietnam Airlines to refurbish aircraft interiors and conduct maintenance and upgrades of its existing fleet.
