International tourism to Vietnam continues to surge, with the country experiencing a 30% jump in visitor arrivals in May 2016.
According to the latest data from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), the country welcomed 757,244 international visitors last month, taking the total for the first five months of 2016 to 4.01 million – up 20% compared the same period last year.
A strong resurgence of arrivals from mainland China has been the main driver of this upturn. Vietnam has now welcomed 1.01m Chinese visitors in 2016, up 44.4% year-on-year. Arrivals from South Korea have also surged, rising 37.7% to 631,263. Combined, these two countries accounted for more than 40% of total arrivals to Vietnam in the January-May period.
But many of Vietnam’s other major source markets also saw double-digit growth, including Japan (+11.7% to 301,747), the US (+14.0% to 245,557), Taiwan (+15.2% to 201,960), Russia (+23.3% to 180,219) and Malaysia (+18.4% to 163,527).
And the number of international travellers arriving in Vietnam by air also rose sharply in the first five months of 2016, up 22.2% to 3.29m.
Vietnam is now well on track to achieve record year for international arrivals. If the current growth rate continues for the remaining months of the year, the country will end 2016 with approximately 9.5m visitors, compared to 7.94m in 2015.
