Vilnius Light Festival transforms Old Town with light art

The Vilnius Light Festival is set to illuminate the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Vilnius from 23 to 25 January 2026, transforming the city into an open-air gallery with 24 contemporary light installations. This eighth edition of the festival coincides with Vilnius' 703rd birthday and aims to turn the winter darkness into a vibrant spectacle, showcasing the city's architecture in a new light.

The festival aligns with the growing trend of noctourism, appealing to Gen Z travellers who favour short, experience-rich trips. According to Paulius Jurgutis, Head of Vilnius Cultural Centre, the event encourages visitors to explore hidden courtyards and quiet squares that become lively gathering spots at night. "Light art reveals the city from a unique perspective," he said.

This year's festival features works by artists from nine countries, including Italy's Alessandro Lupi and Germany's Sven Sauer. Highlights include "Liquid Lens," exploring optical illusions, and "Deviation," which uses light to create sensory environments. The festival also includes student works and installations in diverse venues such as church interiors and underground spaces.

Visitors can navigate the festival using the Vilnius Light Festival app, which provides maps and installation details. Beyond the festival, Vilnius offers winter-friendly activities like the MO Museum and Europe's most accessible urban ski slope, all within 30 minutes of the city centre. With direct flights from major European cities, Vilnius is easily accessible, making the festival an attractive destination for cultural tourists.
