Virgin Atlantic launched its inaugural flight between London and Ghana yesterday. The airline will operate a thrice weekly sevrice to the city from London Heathrow using an Airbus A340-300 aircraft with 240 seats onboard. Speaking from Accra, Sir Richard Branson, President of Virgin Atlantic, commented: “Our new services will bring much-needed competition onto the route, increasing seat availability by 35% and breaking the near monopoly BA has enjoyed for many years. Over the course of the year we expect to fly more than 60,000 passengers, all of whom will benefit from more choice, competitive fares and value for money. The flights will not only allow more people to travel directly between London and Ghana but Ghanaians will also benefit from our onward connections to New York and many other places on Virgin Atlantic’s network.”Meanwhile, the Minister for Transport, Hon. Mike Hammah, said the commencement of operations into Ghana by Virgin Atlantic was a ‘significant milestone’ for air tarvel in the country.”This positive development confirms the reality of the prevailing sound enabling environment in the country and passes as a plus in our effort to make Ghana the aviation hub in the West African Sub region. It is our belief that this will bring about competition on the Accra-London route leading to affordable air fares and value for money for the traveling public. On behalf of the Ministry of Transport I wish Virgin Atlantic Airways a warm welcome to Ghana.”
