Virgin Atlantic is in talks with Lufthansa about the future of UK airline, BMI, the BBC has reported. It is thought that Virgin’s owner, Sir Richard Branson, is keen to form a partnership with Lufthansa-BMI in an effort to combat British Airways’ dominance of the UK market.
Branson said a tie-up between Virgin and BMI would “make us a stronger competitor to British Airways than we are today”, according to the BBC. It is unclear as yet what form a possible deal would take, with Lufthansa now owning an 80% stake in BMI.
In a statement, the German flag-carrier said; “Lufthansa can confirm that it is exploring options regarding the future ownership of BMI. These options include different scenarios.”
