Virgin launches services to Ghana capital

Virgin Atlantic announced today that it will be operating flights between Heathrow and Accra, the capital of Ghana, from May 2010.There will be three flights a week using an Airbus 340-300 which carry 240 passengers at a time. The service will bring competition to British Airways, who are currently the only airline operating to Accra. Nearly 200,000 people fly between the airports each year.The flights from Heathrow are expected to leave on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays at 2230 and arrive in Accra at 0415. Accra flights are expected to depart on Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays from Kotoka International Airport at 1015 and arrive in Heathrow at 1800 the same day. The timings will offer good connections to and from New York Newark.Steve Ridgway, Chief Executive of Virgin, said: “We are delighted that we are able to launch services to this fast growing and vibrant capital city with its historic links to Britain, thriving economy and growing oil and gas industry.” He added: “Ghana is a beacon for economic success in West Africa, and with Africa showing greater economic resilience and growth than other global regions, we are thrilled that this will be our fifth route in Africa. We look forward to offering the best possible service to travellers between Ghana, the UK and the United States.”
