India has upheld its promise made in October to offer Vietnamese nationals visas on arrival (VOA). The announcement came at the Incredible India: Buddhist Destination presentation in Ho Chi Min City last Friday. The offer aims to increase interest in India and its Buddhist sites among travellers from Southeast Asia. The announcement follows a pledge made by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to Vietnam in October when he promised VOA privileges to nationals of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and the Philippines from 1 January 2011. “This step will help make it even easier for Vietnamese tourists to travel to India,” said Indian Consul General in HCMC, Abhay Thaku when speaking at the conference. Representatives from Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) also attended and launched special packages of three to eight-day tours by train for Vietnamese visitors to explore different sites in India, with prices ranging from US$105 (INR4,717) to US$150 per person per night.
