In a long pending move, the eastern state of West Bengal is being renamed as Paschim Banga, which is the translation of the existing name in Hindi and Bengali. This has been in the pipeline for some time but the election of the Mamta Banerjee government recently hastened the process. The name change is in line with what was done earlier in some other cities, such as Madras which is now Chennai, Calcutta as Kolkata and Bombay which became Mumbai.
