The world’s airlines will need 12,800 new regional aircraft in the next 20 years, Bombardier has predicted.
According to its latest forecast, the Canadian planemaker said that the market for 20-149 seat commercial aircraft would be worth US$646 billion over the next two decades, driven by emerging markets such as China, India, Russia and Latin America.
According to Bombardier, the 100-149 seat market will lead demand for regional aircraft, accounting for 6,900 new orders, or 54% of the total. This is closely followed by the 60-99 seat market (5,650 aircraft, 44%), while the 20-59 seat market will account for just 2% of new deliveries.
And while demand from emerging markets is expected to increase significantly, Bombardier predicts that North America will remain the world’s largest market, with 3,710 new aircraft (29% of total), followed by China (2,330, 23%) and Europe (1,700, 13%).
Much of the new demand however, will be to replace existing aircraft. Bombardier estimates that 60% of the current commercial regional aircraft fleet will be retired by 2032, making way for new fuel-efficient aircraft.
Bombardier mainly competes with Brazil’s Embraer in the regional aircraft market, although China’s new C919 aircraft is also expected to enter service in the next few years.
