World Travel Market hopes to tackle the problems with the EU Package Travel Directive in its Thursday programme. WTM hopes the session will play a part in resolving the issues that industry associations have put forward. “Time and again consumers are coming unstuck about what are their rights, while at the same time, the industry is not even sure who should be paying refunds when travel companies go bust”, explained WTM Chairman Fiona Jeffery. “The failure of struggling companies, the ever present threat of holidaymakers who go online to buy several travel products and incidents such as the volcanic ash crisis have all proven that the directive is simply not working.” ABTA Director John De Vial will chair the debate with law professor David Grant, ABTA’s Head of Destination Strategy and Services Nikki White, insurer Alan Lumsden and The Travel Foundation’s Chief Executive Sue Hurdle. Other talks on the Thursday, named WTM World Responsible Tourism Day, include the economic benefits of travel and tourism to communities and tourism to sacred sites.
