The number of wild Yangtze alligators, is expected to reach 300 from the current 120 in the next five to 10 years, Xinhua has reported experts as saying.
Research by the Chinese Alligators Protection Nature Reserve in Anhui Province has reportedly showed the wild alligators are living and breeding in a wider area than in 2005. It also found new tracks of the animal at more sites in Wuhu City, once a major habitat of the reptile.
“Based on the survey, I’m confident the number will reach 300 in the future,” the Reserve’s Deputy Director, Wang Chaolin was quoted saying. “But humans are still the biggest threat to the animal.”
