Anglo-Canadian low-cost carrier, Zoom Airlines, has announced that it has suspended all operations effective 28 August. In a statement posted on the company’s website, Zoom said it “sincerely regrets” that both Zoom Airlines Inc and Zoom Airlines Ltd, (its respective Canadian and UK entities), will be filing for insolvency proceedings.
“We are desperately sorry for the inconvenience that this will cause passengers and those who have booked flights.” A company statement read. “We have done everything we can to support the airline… Even as late as yesterday we had secured a new investment package but the actions of creditors meant we could not continue flying.”
The statement continued to say that its fuel bill had jumped by nearly US$50 million in one year.
Zoom was founded in 2002, providing low-cost transatlantic flights between Canada and the UK. More recently it has expanded into the US and Italy, and also operated charter services to the Caribbean.
Customers who have future travel plans with Zoom have been asked to refer to credit card companies for refunds. Meanwhile British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have stepped in to assist affected customers.
