P&O Ferries has said it will raise customer concerns over the lack of CCTV on its vessels to its safety authorities after describing the issue as one for the ‘wider shipping industry’.
The company’s Facebook page has been inundated with people asking the company to install CCTV on its ships prompted by a man who vanished last May.
The ferry operator has faced criticism over its passenger safety on the social media page after it told a missing passenger’s parents that it was “impossible” to install CCTV cameras on its ships.
Richard Fearnside disappeared on Pride of Kent last May without a trace, with the incident prompting his parents Marianne and Bob to ask P&O to install CCTV cameras.
However P&O Ferries wrote back saying it “would be impossible” for the company to install CCTV due to cost; not covering all areas of the ship and the inability to manage the system 24 hours a day.
Several vessels, both cruise and ferry, already include cameras across all their ships and do not need to be manned 24 hours due to automatic sensors.
When Travel Daily approached the ferry company for comment, it stood by the Fearnside letter which stated what it believed to be impracticalities over installing CCTV.
A spokesperson said: “In light of the petition we see this is an issue for the wider shipping industry and will raise it with our safety authorities to review.”
