Demand for domestic air travel in India accelerated in August.
According to the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the country saw a strong 7.4% increase in passenger traffic (measured in revenue passenger kilometres, or RPKs), during the month. This means that, for the single month, Indian domestic demand is now growing faster than China (+6.4% in August).
Indian airlines were also confident enough to add 7.6% extra available seat capacity during the month, and load factors on Indian domestic flights averaged a steady, if unspectacular, 75.3%.
“Results for the last two months have been solid, perhaps an early sign of improvement as a result of the new business-supportive government regime,” IATA noted.
It warned however, that “the latest (July) budget announcement showed that government stimulus through spending will be limited and economic growth could continue to trend below the pace of other emerging markets for some time yet.”
For the first eight months of the year, India’s traffic, measured in RPKs, has now expanded 3.9%, with average load factors of 74.0%.
